We are besides ourselves on this one.  February 13th, Saturday Night, Valentine’s Day Weekend, have we got a treat for you.  Some old friends had an open date and asked if they could stop by.  It is our pleasure to oblige.

When describing Cherish the Ladies, the critics say it best – “It is simply impossible to imagine an audience that wouldn’t enjoy what they do,” The Boston Globe, “An astonishing array of virtuosity,” The Washington Post, “Expands the annals of Irish music in America…the music is passionate, tender and rambunctious,” The New York Times – and for the past eighteen years, Cherish the Ladies have proven themselves worthy to live up to these accolades and in doing so have become one of the most engaging ensembles in the history of Irish music.

1CTL2008LLarry_ShirkeyThey have grown from a one-time concert concept to an Irish traditional music sensation, literally the most successful and sought-after Irish-American group in Celtic music. Organized by folklorist/musician Mick Moloney and sponsored by the Ethnic Folk Arts Center and the National Endowment for the Arts, they began as a concert series featuring the brightest lights in Irish traditional music. Taking their name from the name of a traditional Irish jig, the group initially won recognition as the first and only all-women traditional Irish band. In a relatively short time, they soon established themselves as musicians and performers without peer and have won many thousands of listeners and fans of their music. With their unique spectacular blend of virtuosi instrumental talents, beautiful vocals, captivating arrangements and stunning step dancing, this powerhouse group combines all the facets of Irish traditional culture and puts it forth in an immensely humorous and entertaining package.

The past years have seen the group traveling all over North and South America, the United Kingdom and Europe, Australia and New Zealand performing in the finest concert halls and international festivals. They are equally at home in front of a symphony orchestra, a performing arts center, a folk festival or even the White House.

“Traditional musicians with attitude” slideE09

The Irish Times calls SLIDE (IRELAND) “traditional musicians with attitude” and credits the group with “bringing drawing room grandeur and high spirits together” with it’s diverse songs ,which range from soulful and sorrowful to contagiously energetic. Folk Roots Magazine proclaims, ”There’s plenty of action and flamboyance in Slides’ music,” which merges ‘swagger’ with traditional expertise.”

Slide – named after the liveliest and most exciting of the tune rhythms from the South of Ireland. This band consists of the youngest acclaimed artists from these renowned bands of the past 2 generations; Dé Danann, Stockton’s Wing, Liam Clancy’s Band all the way through to the Damien Dempsey Band and Danú,

This band, Slide, has honed an electrifying fresh sound, building on their deep roots and teaching expertise in Irish Traditional Music and they are “…taking Irish music to a new place”, Dónal Lunny.  From a mesmeric trance to a nail-biting energy, Slide entices the listener on a journey of musical exploration.  Be it a live performance or a carefully crafted recording, Slide will undoubtedly leave you on a high while taking you from sorrowful reflections to points of high spirited energy in between.

Did I ever mention that an evening with the Celtic Music Association is a cheap date?  An advance ticket for a CMA concert is a mere $18 (and $16.20 if you happen to be a Friend of the CMA.)  For the cost of one of our tickets, we promise that you will see a variety of the established and/or cutting edge artists from the Celtic world.

Other venues who host such events will likely charge you more for your ticket, charge you for parking and charge you a stiff price for beverages and memorabilia from the show.   We don’t do any of that.  The next time you want to satisfy the Celtic muse in your life, give us $20 for a great evening and we might even give you change back.  Let’s see if the Civic Center or Wells Fargo Arena can do that!

In the dead of this coming winter, we will have a whirlwind of activity with 3 concerts in just 36 days.  On January 30, 2010 we will host Malinky, a 5 member group from Scotland who will treat us to traditional Scots melodies and song, as well as their own original material.  If you enjoy Old Blind Dogs and the Tannahill Weavers, you will definitely find Malinky to your liking.

On February 13, 2010, we will host Cherish the Ladies from New York.  This is the 3rd time the CMA has been able to host this gracious group.  This concert will likely sell out very quickly.  Stay tuned.  (Did I say we were a cheap Valentine’s date? Of course I did.)

Finally, to help you get your green going, we will host the Irish group Slide on March 6, 2010.  These guys rocked the house at the Milwaukee Irish Fest last summer.  We consider it a coup to have this band in time to kick-start St Patrick’s Day in fine style.

Did I say we were a cheap date? Of course I did.  This may be the best news of all.  The CMA is offering a package for the 3 concerts that I had just mentioned.  Here’s the deal; for $50 ($45 for current Friends of the CMA, it’s never too late to join) we will give you one ticket for each of the Malinky, Cherish the Ladies and Slide concerts.

This is the detail part:

This ticket package is available by check only through our regular postal address:

The Celtic Music Association

PO Box 30001

Des Moines, IA 50310.

We will not be selling the ticket package through our ticket outlets or through Iowa Tix You can still buy tickets to the individual concerts from CMA board members, at the ticket outlets, Iowa Tix or at the door at the usual prices.

We will take orders for the package until January 15, 2010.  If the order is received by December 15, 2009, we will make every effort to have the tickets in your mailbox by Christmas (hint, hint.)  After January 15, 2010, the ticket package will no longer be available.

OK, now we all know that a CMA concert is a cheap date, but we are never cheap on the talent.

Hope to see you at the show.
